The Nigerian Government has been advised to quickly develop policies and programmes aimed at harnessing the abundant talents, skills and energy of the Youth, towards ensuring a better Country, that would work positively for all.
A community leader and Estate Developer, Chief Toyin Amuzu gave this advice in Abeokuta, while reacting to the recent protests and its attendant effects on the Nation, warning that Nigeria would continue to sit on a keg of gunpowder, if it fails to harness the potentialities of its teeming youth.
The community leader who is the Okanlomo of Ijeun Land, said the #Endsars protesters have created a momentum which must be seized to get Nigeria moving fast, towards realising her goals and objectives for National Development.
According to him, “Government at all tiers need to respond quickly and effectively to the young people’s demands, by implementing a range of ambitious reforms across the education and skills systems to drive all sectors of the economy”.
Chief Toyin Amuzu urged the youth of the Nation not to relent or be discouraged but to be emboldened and come together, to take over the present and future of the Country, for the purpose of creating a better, organised, disciplined, united, law abiding , transparent, progressive and productive Society.
The Community leader, who condemned the shootings at the Lekki Tollgate, urged government to bring to justice, officers and men of the Nigerian Army involved in the killings as well as officers of the Nigerian police fingered in acts of brutality, violence and human rights violation across the Country.
He called on government to initiate a comprehensive Police reform and the entire national security apparatus, which must include training, welfare, equipment, recruitment of more hands, formulation of rules of engagement with the civil populace and general discipline.
Chief Amuzu in his words, said “It is in the interest of the Nation to know that protest is an integral part of democracy, most especially when President Muhammadu Buhari also benefitted from such protests before becoming the president. It is then important to devise an enduring plan to always provide protection for protesters, instead of killing or antagonising them”.
While condemning the looting and the needless destruction of properties across Nigeria, he explained that the actions had reflected how impoverish and poor the people are, stressing the need for government to work assiduously to revamp the economy and introduce genuine social welfare packages for the people.
He prayed for the souls of the martyr of the protests, whom he said laid down their lives for a better Nigeria.
Chief Amuzu said “their sacrifice must not be in vain, thus the need for the youth to come together and channel their efforts in ensuring they emerge leaders across board”.
