On Tuesday, chief federal prosecutor Michael Sherwin announced the number of suspects wanted in the January 6th US Capitol Building riots has surpassed 400 people and is rapidly growing with the goal of charging suspects with seditious conspiracy soon. The riots occurred after a controversial rally where statements by then-President Donald Trump and other surrogates allegedly incited the audience to participate in a violent insurrection by breeching the US Capitol Building leaving 5 dead including 1 officer with many injuries.

According to historians, the January 6th riot was the first hostile force to control the Capitol Building since the War of 1812. Inside, lawmakers were conducting the ceremonial counting of electoral votes finalizing the 2020 presidential election for then-President Elect Joe Biden over Trump. Then-Vice President Mike Pence and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi along with all Congressmen and Senators were rushed into secure locations moments before rioters breached the House and Senate Chambers. Congressional staffers sheltered in place as rioters searched offices. It would be hours until a coalition of Washington, DC’s Metropolitan Police, US Parks Police, Capitol Police, and eventually National Guard soldiers regain control.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and other federal law enforcement agencies have, as of Tuesday, arrested 138 suspect aided by family members, friends, and former romantic partners. Sherwin also placed a US$75,000 reward for information regarding the individual allegedly placing pipe bomb devices outside the Republican and Democratic National Committee Headquarters seen on surveillance video.

In the past three weeks since the riots, the investigation has been moving rapidly being granted 500 subpoenas and search warrants with the public providing over 200,000 addition pieces of digital information. Sherwin confirmed last week the Department of Justice has setup a task force with the intentions of issuing sedition charges carrying a maximum 20-year sentence soon.

Sherwin’s investigation is limited to crimes allegedly committed by rioters on Capitol Grounds and not the focus of the controversial statements which is the subject of the Senates upcoming impeachment trial on a single count of “Inciting an Insurrection”.
